Ok mama, you’re probably reading this because you just killed it making your very own cake masterpiece. Was it for a family members wedding? What about a child’s birthday? Most likely, the person you asked to make your cake gave you a craaaazy price and you knew for a fact that you could make your own cake for AT LEAST half that price. Am I right?? If you answered yes, these 5 reasons to become a home baker are just for you.

The first reason on why you should become a home baker is to be your own boss. Who doesn’t love that?! This is especially great if you are wanting to spend more time with your family. With me being a wife and mama, it made more sense to work for myself and create my own hours rather than working for someone else. If you know me, my family owns a farm here in Hawaii. 6 generations and still growing! It truly is a blessing, and also a sacrifice. It LITERALLY takes our entire family (husbands and kids included) to keep the farm running. So, having my own hours allows me to not only have time with my family, but also have time to help out farm grow and thrive.

The second reason to become a home baker is to allow your baking hobby to come alive! It’s the perfect creative outlet that you may need after a long day with maybe your teething baby or kids that are just having a rough day. Seriously, baking is such a therapeutic activity and could possibly relieve a lot of stress. It could possibly cause a lot of stress too but let’s not focus on the negatives! By having this creative outlet, you can focus on taking care of your physical and mental health, and could potentially inspire your kids to bake as well. It brings me such joy to see my son and nephew always peeking through the window to see what I will be baking next.

The third reason is simple. You create your own wage. If you are going to be baking cakes for fun or for therapeutic reasons, why not make an income once you start perfecting your skills?! You’re probably thinking, “but I’m doing this for fun, why would I want to sell my cakes?” Simple. The price of ingredients will start to add up, eventually hindering your passion. Don’t get me wrong, when I first started baking, I had absolutely no clue on what to charge. I knew that if I charged too low, it would not only hurt me but also the other local bakers in my hometown. Eventually, (this year actually) is when I made the decision to increase my prices. What sparked this decision? Well, a Wendy’s opened up a couple of miles down from where I live and I saw the sign. “We’re Hiring! Starting Pay $12”. I instantly realized that I was paying myself less than that, for something I take AT LEAST six to eight hours on. I had to make a change. I am so grateful that I am able to have a customer base that appreciates my worth along with the quality that I produce for each and every customer.

This brings me to the fourth reason of why you should pursue your baking dream. He ability to help someone celebrate a special moment in their lives is priceless. I have built so many relationships with my customers because I treat them like family. When people feel that connection, price does not matter. And honestly, you will be more open to working with people’s budgets a lot more when you are not thinking about the money but the client instead. What are they celebrating? Who are they celebrating? How can we make this a memorable cake and not just a generic one that they could purchase at a store? Think of the last cake you had. Was it custom made? Who made it for you? Can you remember the design? These are so important in creating lasting memories and relationships with each and every customer.

The last reason why you should become a home baker is actually the real reason why I decided to turn it into a business. Saving money on cakes. In 2016, my sister told us that she was getting married! Exciting news right?! Well, when pricing comes into play things start to get a little stressful. “They want how much for a wedding cake?!” Yeah, I was not going to let my sister pay the amount that the vendor had quoted her for her cake. So, without having any prior baking experience, I decided I was going to make her cake. I had so much fun! I fell in love with baking and knew that I could practice and make cakes for each family celebration that we had. No more buying store bought cakes for this mama, I got it covered! The cost for making cakes versus buying from the store or even custom made by someone else is a tremendous difference. The only thing that you would need to account for is your time. Once you have that squared away, you’ll be golden!

If there’s anything that you could take away from this, I hope it’s that you will be good to yourself and your family. Staying healthy mentally and physically is the most important thing you can do in this point in life. Take the leap. Bake like a boss. Have fun and God bless!
